#4 Explain the humor/irony of the title of the chapter, "Rowdy and i had a long and serious discussion about basketball." (Hattie)
I think the irony about this chapter tile is that they barely talk about basketball. The conversation via email consisted of Rowdy saying that the Redskins will beat them next year, then he calls him a "faggot". I think that this conversation might have fixed the two peoples friendship. This is the first time that Rowdy laughed, or email laughed, with Arnold. At the end, Arnold stats "I was a happy faggot"(198), this means that he was happy because Rowdy was finally talking to him. There friendship will never be the same, but there "Long and serious discussion about basketball" might be the start.

The irony of the title of this chapter, “Rowdy and I Have a Long and Serious Discussions about Basketball” is that there is nothing long or serious about the “conversation” between Rowdy and Arnold. What they had was only an exchange of emails, making fun of each other, rather than a long and serious discussion about basketball. First Arnold sent Rowdy an email apologizing for beating Rowdy’s team. Then Rowdy writes back promising Arnold that Rowdy will kick his asses next year and calls Arnold a “little faggot”. Although rude, this is not unexpected based on how Rowdy was described throughout the book. Arnold, knowing Rowdy’s personality, thinks that it was “a little bit friendly”(Alexie 197) because it was the first time that Rowdy and Arnold had talked to each other since he left the rez.
ReplyDeleteThe irony of the title "Rowdy and I have a Long and Serious Discussions about Basketball" is that there isn't anything long or serious about the conversation, but it served as an ice breaker between the two friends. Having a common subject to talk allowed them to laugh and sort of connect again. Even though Rowdy says to him "And you'll cry like the little faggot you are." (Alexie 197) Arnold did not take offense, instead he took it as a term of friendship. Rowdy was poking fun at him without being really mean like he can be.
