Question 4- Explain the significance/importance of the friendship with Gordy and Junior (Katherine)
Gordy plays an important role in Junior's life at Rearden. Gordy is a true and honest friend, and he is Junior's only friend at Rearden. Junior feels very alone at Rearden, and Gordy helps him to have another "weird" friend that is loyal to him. Gordy teaches Junior so many new things, and Gordy finds hope in Junior that Rowdy never had for him, "Gordy believed in me. He wouldn't let me give up."(Alexie 94). Gordy opens Junior up to a whole new world of knowledge."He not only tutored me and challenged me, but he made me realize that hard work..is joyous"(Alexie 98). Gordy shows Junior many new ways of thinking and perspectives on life. Gordy assists Junior to discover what he is capable of. Gordy helps Junior to feel that his effort can pay off, and that there is hope for Junior in the world.

Katherine, I love your constant expression of hope in this blog post. I agree with Gordy's assistance to Junior with "joyous learning" (Alexie 98). I also agree with Gordy's continuous support and brotherly love for Junior (Alexie 94). This was an overall, concise blog post, explaining Gordy being the new sender of hope to Junior.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you are saying here, about how Junior feels very alone at his new school, especially after his best friend turned into his worst enemy. Junior doesn't really have anyone his age he can talk to. When they were in Mr. Dodge's class, Gordy really helped Junior out, and that was really the first stepping stone in their relationship. Gordy and Junior are assisting each other and becoming great friends. Gordy really brings out the good in Junior that he hasn't really been able to show while attending Reardan. "He (Gordy) really helped me through school..." (Alexie 98)
ReplyDeleteI really liked how you explained how Gordy helped Junior and I thought that it was a good way to answer the question of the significance of their friendship. In a way Gordy helped give Junior hope that there was still a chance of him fitting in to the Reardan community. "I was an Indian kid from the reservation. I was lonely and sad and isolated and terrified" (Alexie 94). His friendship with Gordy was important because if it hadn't happened, than this knew school that was supposedly filled with hope and bright futures, would have been no different than his old school on the Rez because Junior would have been lonely and hopeless. Overall I think that your response was thorough and clearly answered the question.
ReplyDeleteI liked the way you used your quotes but i do think that you could include more comparison between Gordy and Rowdy. Rowdy was Juniors best friend for a while and he replaced him with Gordy. I feel that Gordy is a better friend than Rowdy to Junior just because of their interests. The two characters are very different but somehow Julior liked both of them and his friends and i feel that that is a key element to this chapter in the story. Overall though a nice job.
